Rolex publishes its own prices country by country, which makes the Submariner one of the few luxury watches you can compare honestly. On 23 Oct 2026 we read the steel Submariner Date (126610LN) and the no-date (124060) on rolex.com in fourteen countries and converted them at the European Central Bank's rates of 22 Oct 2026. Japan comes out cheapest. Brazil is dearest by a mile. And the gap between any two countries is smaller than the gap between any boutique and the pre-owned market.

Official rolex.com prices read 23 Oct 2026 (Portugal 16 Oct 2026), converted at ECB reference rates of 22 Oct 2026; the dirham is derived from the ECB dollar rate and the 3.6725 peg. Shelf prices include VAT or consumption tax, except the US, which excludes sales tax. "Visitor estimate" is our estimate of what a non-resident pays after the tourist tax refund, net of typical operator fees; it is not a quote. We have not modelled refunds for Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia or the UAE yet.
Is Rolex cheaper in Japan?
Yes, and it is not close. The 126610LN is ¥1,683,000 on rolex.com's Japanese site, which already includes 10% consumption tax. That is €9,564, or $10,717, before a visitor gets the tax back. A tourist buying tax-free pays about ¥1,530,000: €8,695, or roughly $9,740. The no-date 124060 works out at about €7,723 the same way.
Most of that is the yen. At 175.97 to the euro, a price set in yen looks cheap from almost anywhere.
Two things to know before booking flights. First, the tax-free process changes on 1 November 2026. Until 31 October the tax comes off at the till. After that you pay the full price and get the tax refunded once Japan Customs confirms at departure that the watch is leaving with you (National Tax Agency leaflet). Second, a low list price only helps if the boutique will actually sell you one, and steel sports models are hard to find on the shelf anywhere.
Is the Submariner cheaper in Europe than in the US?
It depends on who you are. The US list price is $11,350, about €10,129, but it excludes sales tax, which runs from 0% in states such as Oregon and Delaware to about 10.25%. Inside the euro area the cheapest shelf we found is Germany at €10,950, then France, Spain and Italy, with Portugal the dearest of the five at €11,300.
A traveller from outside the EU can reclaim the VAT, which after refund-company fees we estimate brings the German price to €9,308–€9,855. An EU resident can't. For someone living in Lisbon, the best legal saving inside the EU is the €350 between Portugal and Germany, and that is not worth a flight.
Switzerland is a smaller win than its reputation suggests: CHF 10,150, about €11,019, or €10,358–€10,579 for a visitor after the 8.1% VAT refund and fees.
Why is the Submariner so expensive in the UK and Brazil?
The UK price is not high in pounds (£9,500), but visitors can't get the 20% VAT back. Tax-free shopping in Great Britain ended on 1 January 2021 (GOV.UK), so €11,341 is what a tourist pays too. That makes London the dearest place in Europe on our list for a visitor, a touch above Lisbon's shelf price.
Brazil is in a different league: R$ 96,000, about €16,969, +50% on Portugal. For a Brazilian buyer the useful comparison is a trip abroad, and the US$1,000 customs allowance does not go far against a watch like this.
What about Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai?
On shelf price alone, Hong Kong (HK$91,700, about €10,439) undercuts every European shelf we read and the UAE (AED 45,450, about €11,045) sits near the euro-area prices. Singapore (S$15,950) and Australia (A$18,950) are dearer. We have not yet checked each country's tourist refund rules against official sources, so the table leaves the visitor column blank for them rather than guessing.
How much is a Submariner on the pre-owned market?
More than at any boutique on the list, Brazil aside. On 23 Oct 2026 we read 68 Chrono24 listings for the exact 126610LN (black dial, steel, Oyster bracelet). They asked $10,932 to $18,024, with a median of $14,275: +26% over the US list price of $11,350. Only 1 was under list, a fair-condition watch.
The no-date is firmer still. 62 listings for the 124060 had a median ask of $13,200, +31% over its $10,050 list price, and the cheapest one was +12% over.
Put the two sets of numbers side by side and the travel question shrinks. The spread between a Japanese tourist price and a Lisbon shelf is about €2,605. The median premium dealers ask over US list is about $2,925. If a boutique anywhere offers you a Submariner at list, take it, wherever it is.

Do I pay tax bringing a Rolex home?
Usually, yes, and this is where most of the saving disappears. Coming back to Portugal or anywhere in the EU from outside it, your duty-free allowance is €430 by air or sea, and a single item worth more cannot be split, so the whole watch is taxed: import VAT (23% in mainland Portugal) plus any customs duty (EUR-Lex summary of Directive 2007/74/EC). On the Japanese visitor price, VAT alone takes the watch to about €10,694 before duty, against €11,300 at a Lisbon boutique. The saving is real but small, and you need to declare it.
The UK allowance is £390, Brazil's US$1,000. Our savings calculator runs the numbers for your home country, including duty.
Will the Submariner go up in price again?
We don't forecast, but the record is clear enough. The steel Submariner Date was $8,950 in the US in Jan 2020 (as the 116610LN) and $11,350 on rolex.com in Oct 2026, +27% in under seven years. Most of the steps we have recorded landed in January. Luxury Bazaar reported the June 2026 increase as gold-only, leaving the steel Submariners where they were. Every dated price is on the item page, and the Rolex price list for 2026 covers the rest of the range.
