The medium Classic Flap has more than doubled in price in ten years. On the trackers we follow it went from $4,900 in the US in May 2016 to $11,700 in Apr 2026. Resale has not kept up. On 23 Oct 2026 the pre-owned market was asking well under retail for both leathers, so the old line that a Chanel flap is an investment needs a closer look. We read 277 exact-match listings to give it one.
How much is the Chanel Classic Flap in 2026?
The medium, the size known as the 11.12, has been reported at $11,700 in the US since the increase of 2 Apr 2026, up from $11,300. The European figure in the same tracker table is €10,500, including VAT. Chanel doesn't publish handbag prices online, so this one rests on a price-tracking blog (PurseBop). We label it as blog-tier on the item page, and you should treat it as reported rather than official.

US boutique price before sales tax. Dates are when the price was in effect according to the source. Blog means a price-tracking blog, press a news outlet, market data an auction house's published tables.
That is +139% in a little under ten years. The fastest stretch was 2021: $6,800 in January, $7,800 by July, when The Fashion Law reported rises of 15% or more on some bags (The Fashion Law), and $8,800 by November. Then $10,200 by March 2023. Since 2024 the steps have been smaller, a few hundred dollars at a time. If you are tracking the next one, our Chanel price increase calendar keeps the dates.
Does the Chanel Classic Flap hold its value?
Against what it cost when it was bought, often yes. Against what it costs today, no. Here is what resellers were asking for the medium flap on 23 Oct 2026, read separately for each leather from Fashionphile, Rebag, LuxeDH and Madison Avenue Couture:
| Leather | Asking range | Median ask | vs $11,700 retail | Listings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Caviar | $4,245–$11,500 | $8,165 | −30% | 131 |
| Lambskin | $4,370–$8,995 | $6,982 | −40% | 146 |
Asking prices on live listings, 23 Oct 2026. Medium (11.12) Classic Double Flap only, any colour, gold- or silver-tone hardware; patent, chevron, metallic, So Black and seasonal versions excluded. Older bags the reseller calls vintage are included.
The detail that stopped us: the median caviar ask, $8,165, is below the $8,800 the bag cost new in November 2021. 88 of the 131 caviar listings were under that 2021 price. Someone who paid $8,800 in 2021 and kept the bag nice would see resellers asking a little less than that today, and a consignment payout would be lower again. A buyer who pays $11,700 today and sells next year is starting about $3,500 down.
Even the top of the range doesn't clear retail. The highest caviar ask was $11,500 for a bag graded new, still 2% under the boutique price.
Caviar vs lambskin: which resells better?
Caviar, clearly. Its median ask is $1,185 above lambskin's, and in the "excellent" grade the gap is similar ($8,395 against $7,210). That fits what owners say about the two: caviar is a pebbled, hard-wearing calfskin that keeps its corners, while lambskin is softer and shows scuffs and creases sooner.
The lambskin read also leans older. 48 of its 146 listings were sold as vintage, against 5 for caviar, but that isn't what makes it cheap. Strip the vintage bags out and the lambskin median barely moves, to $6,905.
For a buyer, that is good news. A lambskin medium flap at the median ask ($6,982) costs 40% less than a new one, for the same bag in the leather many people prefer to carry. Just inspect corners and the flap edge before you pay.
Is the Classic Flap cheaper in Europe?
A little, if you can reclaim the tax. The trackers' European price of €10,500 includes VAT and works out at about $11,765 at the ECB rate of 22 Oct 2026, against $11,700 in the US before sales tax. A visitor from outside the EU who claims the VAT back typically keeps 10% to 15% of the shelf price after the refund company's fee, which would bring it to roughly €8,925–€9,450. That is our estimate, not a quote.
Two caveats. The trackers give one European figure, and we don't have country-by-country Chanel prices to check it against. And for an EU resident there's no refund, so €10,500 is the price. The savings calculator works it out from your home country.
So is the Chanel Classic Flap worth it?
As a bag, it can be. As an investment, on these numbers, no. Sotheby's ran a piece in 2024 arguing for Chanel bags as an investment (Sotheby’s), and the retail chart above is the case for it: if you bought in 2016, the price tag on the shelf has moved up a lot since. But the money only shows up when someone pays you, and in October 2026 resellers are asking 30% below retail for caviar and 40% below for lambskin. Those are asking prices, so sales land lower still.
Our view: buy it new if you want the boutique experience and plan to carry it for years. If you want the bag itself, the pre-owned market is the better deal right now, and an excellent-condition caviar at around $8,395 is where we would look first. Compare that with the Hermès picture in our Birkin resale guide, where retail is the floor rather than the ceiling, or with Chanel vs Hermès side by side.

Not against today's retail price. On 23 Oct 2026 the median ask for a pre-owned medium flap was $8,165 in caviar (−30% vs retail, 131 listings) and $6,982 in lambskin (−40%, 146 listings).
